Cite three examples to describe how an engineer ensures that his or her designs are made to scale.
↪It is exactly defined by those three words.
1. Process - it is a set of activities that turns input into wanted outcome.
2. Design - a representation of the looks, functions and functionality of your product (outcome)
3. Engineering - is the use of science in order to achieve goals
So here is how I would define engineering design process:
It is a set of activities, powered by physics and mathematics in order to create optimal solution.
I think the most important word here is optimal .
In engineering design it is all about the limits and boundaries. You are limited by budget, materials, space, time...
So you can never create the best solution. You can only do optimal.
Optimal is a solution which will meet all (or the most) limits.
If you are to design a car engine, the best design would probably be the one that does not use any fuel.
But that is not possible, right, since you are limited by the law of conservation of energy. So the optimal solution would be an engine which will use the less fuel as possible.
Of course, there are best practices for the design activities mentioned above (workflows, decision points, phases...)
This is the process model that works for me:
1. You get the task (problem).
2. Set the boundaries
3. You get an idea for solution (brainstorm)
4. Create a mathematical model for solution (describe by numbers)
5. Create a physical model for solution
6. Concept design (sketch)
7. Drawings (3D model)
8. Simulate (if simulations fails, return to point 6)
9. Prototype and test
After this, your solution will be implemented and used.
You will get feedback.
You (or someone else) will improve your solution (product)
Your old solution will "die" (or be recycled)
New solution will take it's place.
And that is what is called product life cycle. Important part of engineering design process.
