It serves as pause in the action when Tom can reflect on what is happening for the audience.

Answers

Answer:

It foreshadows Tom’s departure from his family at the end of the play.

Explanation:

By going out to the fire escape and smoking, Tom is choosing to distance himself from his mother and sister. His mother frowns upon his excessive smoking, and his sister is afraid for his safety and well-being when she sees he is constantly unhappy. His further alienation from them and the rest of the world by going to the movies continuously only solidifies this argument.

In this unit, you analyzed how authors develop characters within their stories. Authors often try to create characters that readers will find relatable. These characters often have qualities that readers may already have or wish they had.

Imagine that you're writing a novel in your favorite genre (for example, adventure, science fiction, mystery). Describe the characters, setting, and plot of the novel. Who would be the protagonist, or main character, of your story? What qualities would this character have? Do you possess any of these qualities? Do you wish you had any of these qualities?

Answers

Answer:

The protagonist of the novel is Liam, a 35 year old man who is surrounded by debt in a city full of violence, corruption, and fraud. He learns that earning a living in a hostile city is much easier if you commit crimes and illegal treachery. Even after this sudden epiphany, he never follows through with crimes and sinks lower and lower into debt and eventually loses his house. With nowhere to go, Liam turns himself into a secured prison and lies about his criminal record. While in prison, he encounters a character vs self scenario, and is frustrated at himself for not following through with crimes and turning himself in. On his fifth night at his cell, a masked man opens his locked cell and helps him outside, even giving him a map for good hideouts from police. Liam follows the map to an abandoned hospital and gradually grows accustomed to this living there. He reads in a local newspaper about a $2,000 cash reward for finding and capturing any prisoners that have escaped. One day, Liam hears loud noises coming from outside the hospital. He peers out the window and is shocked to discover the same masked man with police accompanying him. It turns out that the man was a security guard working at the prison, and hatched a plan to make money off "finding" escaped inmates. Liam continues his run around the city and ends up in the poorest section, where everything is walled off. He gathers people who have exceptional hatred against the city's corrupt government and starts a rebellion. Soon after, protests, boycotts, mass gatherings, and speeches would parade around the city, all in the name of Liam. This character would be angered and frustrated at everything all the time, and I don't think I possess that kind of quality. No, I do not wish to have any of his qualitlies

List five reasons why the Renaissance originated in Italy.

Answers

Explanation:

1) Italy was in the 15th century the wealthiest region in Europe. Its merchant class, clergy, and the aristocracy had money to pay for artists and could afford to sponsor various large cultural, architectural, and artistic projects of that time. Italy did not experience significant warfare as did Western and Central Europe due outbreak of the 100 Years' War that devastated medieval Europe. This helped to have more capital surplus than the rest of Europe.

2) Italy has the largest heritage of the Roman civilization in Europe. Europeans were always fascinated by the Roman past, but they had a hard time connecting with it (for example due to lack of education). However, the Roman past was present everywhere. The more the Italians had uncovered about the lost civilization, the more they were fascinated by it. It generated more interest in Roman culture, writing, art, architecture, and way of life. Europeans in the medieval and renaissance era were not aware of any Greek contribution to the Roman civilization. This was discovered much later, in the 18th century, when the historians proved that the Greek culture predates Roman.

3) Relative decline of France. France was the largest and the most powerful medieval state in Europe. It gave the world Gothic art which become the imprint of the medieval era. French dynasty, society, and monastic orders (Cistercians, Premonstratensians) were radiating its culture to the rest of Europe. But the 100 Years' War devastated much of France, even Paris. The French dynasty did not provide cultural influence, and this void was filled with Italian clergy and papacy (it also moved from southern France back to Italy). Popes and the clergy influenced the rest of Italy well before the outbreak of the Reformation. Renaissance predates Reformation by 100 years.

4) The level of urbanization is due to a more advanced economy. Italian cities were the largest in Europe and were banking centers of the medieval world. Outside Italy, only Paris could compare to the size of Milan, Venice, Florence, Pisa, and Napoli. The cities had a very diversified economy and complex social classes similar to modern Europe in medieval times. The large merchant class was literate and was harder to control by the church hierarchy. Modern society was far more secular and more open-minded about various topics like nudity. Renaissance was a break-point from medieval piety because of its secularization.

5) Political structure. Because Italy was fragmented and lacked a significant center of gravity, each urban center had its own cultural influence. The larger cities were also competing for the best artists of their times.
