How did America support ww1 without fighting?

Answers

Answer 1

1. For service members and civilians alike, boosting morale was crucial throughout World War I, and much of that was done through humor. From decorative posters, to uplifting songs, to amusing cartoons, American society came together to bring lightheartedness and encouragement to soldiers serving abroad.

Comic drawings and cartoons, such as Bruce Bairnsfather’s “Old Bill,” were especially popular among the troops. Bairnsfather’s work was so popular that in the following years of World War II, he was employed as the official cartoonist to the American forces in Europe, and contributed to Stars and Stripes and Yank, the famous magazine published by the U.S. military during World War II.

2. Giving is Caring

Civilians donated to charities such as the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) or the Salvation Army, both of which would later come together to form the USO during World War II, along with four other organizations. Donations from civilians went towards YMCA camps near the front lines, where they provided troops with a canteen, concert hall, library, game room and a quiet area – much like the USO centers of today.

The American Library Association raised funds to supply soldiers with books and magazines to read, and civilians purchased war bonds and postage stamps to help fund resources for the military, fueling a shared, fighting spirit across the country.

3. Letters Home

When far from home, troops craved a reminder of their loved ones. That is why organizations such as the National Jewish Welfare Board – which would later become incorporated into the USO – led letter-writing campaigns throughout the war to deliver mail to service members overseas.

Everyday Americans would gather in their homes, churches and community centers to write letters of encouragement to service members fighting overseas.

Answers

USS Maine was a United States Navy ship that sank in Havana Harbor in February 1898, contributing to the outbreak of the Spanish–American War in April. American newspapers, engaging in yellow journalism to boost circulation, claimed that the Spanish were responsible for the ship's destruction. The phrase, "Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!" became a rallying cry for action. Although the Maine explosion was not a direct cause, it served as a catalyst that accelerated the events leading up to the war.

Maine is described as an armored cruiser or second-class battleship, depending on the source. Commissioned in 1895, she was the first U.S. Navy ship to be named after the state of Maine.[a][1][2] Maine and the similar battleship Texas were both represented as an advance in American warship design, reflecting the latest European naval developments. Both ships had two gun turrets staggered en échelon, and full masts were omitted due to the increased reliability of steam engines.[3] Due to a protracted 9-year construction period, Maine and Texas were obsolete by the time of completion.[3] Far more advanced vessels were either in service or nearing completion that year. What kind of mutation will result from the mistake made during DNA replication in the nucleotide sequence above?

Answers

Answer:

DNA replication is a truly amazing biological phenomenon. Consider the countless number of times that your cells divide to make you who you are—not just during development, but even now, as a fully mature adult. Then consider that every time a human cell divides and its DNA replicates, it has to copy and transmit the exact same sequence of 3 billion nucleotides to its daughter cells. Finally, consider the fact that in life (literally), nothing is perfect. While most DNA replicates with fairly high fidelity, mistakes do happen, with polymerase enzymes sometimes inserting the wrong nucleotide or too many or too few nucleotides into a sequence. Fortunately, most of these mistakes are fixed through various DNA repair processes. Repair enzymes recognize structural imperfections between improperly paired nucleotides, cutting out the wrong ones and putting the right ones in their place. But some replication errors make it past these mechanisms, thus becoming permanent mutations. These altered nucleotide sequences can then be passed down from one cellular generation to the next, and if they occur in cells that give rise to gametes, they can even be transmitted to subsequent organismal generations. Moreover, when the genes for the DNA repair enzymes themselves become mutated, mistakes begin accumulating at a much higher rate. In eukaryotes, such mutations can lead to cancer.

1. What can you infer from the primary source about the purpose of this piece of literature?
2. How did the author intend for his work to be taken and used?
3. Was he trying to be controversial or calming?
4. How does it all influence the meaning of the piece?

Answers

Answer:

Find the explanation below.

Explanation:

1. The primary source which is a telegram from Senator Joseph McCarthy to President Henry S. Truman was meant to raise suspicions of personnel's within the United States government whom he referred to as Communists. This happened at a time when the citizens of the United States were apprehensive about communists because of possible links to the Soviet Union.

2. The author intended that the President take his claims seriously by fishing out the names of those within the State Department whom he claimed were communists, prosecuting them, and possibly relieve them of their services.

3. The Senator was trying to be controversial. He wanted to gain cheap political points and also curry favor with the people so that he can be seen as a Senator that worked hard to prevent threats to the American nation. Then, he would be re-elected by the people in his second term.

4. This telegram helps us to see how certain political leaders can promote policies for their selfish interests and not necessarily for the people. It also shows how tense the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union was after World War II.

Why did the Maya civilization decline? Elaborate (1 Full Paragraph)

Answers

Explanation:

The Maya were undoubtedly among the great ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica. They flourished in the jungles of present-day Mexico (south), Guatemala and Belize. This mysterious ancient civilization was one of the most important ancient cultures to develop on our planet, noted for the Maya script which was the only known developed writing system of the Pre-Columbian Americas. However, the collapse of the Maya civilization during the ninth century A.D. is a major conundrum in the history of mankind and while numerous explanations have been put forward to explain, the three most significant causes of the decline of Mayan civilization are famine, epidemic diseases and climate change.

Another factor to the decline of the ancient Mayan civilization was disease. A widespread disease can result in rapid depopulation. The Mayans lived near tropical rainforest areas and contagious diseases that are spread by parasites are common in rainforest regions. If some of the diseases such as malaria which is a disease that is carried and spread by infected mosquitoes, were to infect a person at a young age, it affects their health resulting in developmental issues as well as making them vulnerable to other illnesses later on in life. Specifically, due to an epidemic of the plant hopper-borne virus, maize mosaic virus (MMV), is proposed as a primary contributing cause of the collapse. Maize Mosaic virus is a devastating disease transmitted by the corn planthopper, an insect restricted to tropic lowlands. Major diseases in the tropics are assessed thus it has been serious only where corn is grown continuously through the year in wet or irrigated tropics. Corn was the main food for the Mayans and Maize Mosaic corn disease spread through pestered corns containing contagious diseases which were spread throughout the Mayan city-states. The infectious illnesses were spread into the Mayans system, resulting in the death of almost the entire Mayan population. With the lack of modern medicine, the distinguished and noble people had no idea how to treat the illnesses. Contagious diseases such as measles, mumps, cholera, and smallpox spread and killed about ninety percent of the Mayan population. This lead to the Mayan collapse and now, what is left are the city structures.

Lastly, climate change causes a catastrophic collapse in human history. Studies have shown that the Maya civilization collapsed due to a century-long drought which took place around the ninth century. However, the Maya contributed to the collapse of their civilization by transforming the land through removing nearly all of the forest and replacing it with agricultural crops. Though deforestation didn’t cause a drought, it amplified natural droughts when they occurred. Plants interact with the atmosphere; dark plants such as dense tropical forest absorb energy from the sun while lighter coloured plants reflect sunlight which cools the atmosphere. Water vapour needs to rise and condense to create a rainstorm while the cool air sinks. Without warm and unstable air rising into the atmosphere, rainstorms become less common. Since the Maya burned and cut down timber very fast, deforestation levels were high using wood for construction purposes as the cities expanded. This causes lack of rain which helped raise temperatures on land. The energy of the sun would hit the bare ground either heating it up or causing water to evaporate from the soil. Without forests, there was less production of moisture in the atmosphere and croplands holding less water; causing droughts to deepen more as the suns energy heated the ground.  Rainfall was declined and as crops replaced forests, more sunlight bounced back into space. Using dendrochronology, a study of tree rings to date environmental changes, a team from the University of Arkansas observed the Mayan drought through tree rings and concluded that the drought was more severe and prolonged than anything in the modern era. Trees can live for hundreds of years and can experience a variety of environmental conditions: wet years, dry years, cold years and much more. From this, researchers are able to determine the year of formation for each tree ring and analyzed what the rings’ growth patterns had to say about how soil moisture varied from growth season to growth season over the years, a parameter directly associated with rainfall. Using dendrochronology, researchers are able to determine the climate changes that affected the ancient Maya and the drought that overcame them.

In conclusion, although the Ancient Maya were among the great ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica, building cities with elaborate ceremonial center, and their downfall remains a mystery. However, the three utmost reasons that contributed to their collapse are famine, epidemic disease and climate change.

most of the people in Africa live in the savannah. list a few reasons as you can to explain this pattern of population density.

Answers

Answer:

Savanna plants annually experience a long period in which moisture is inadequate for continued growth. Although the aboveground parts of the shallow-rooted grasses quickly dry out and die, the more deeply rooted trees can tap moisture lying further beneath the surface longer into the dry season. Grasses grow rapidly when moisture is available but die back when it is not, surviving long dry periods as dormant buds close to the soil surface. Sandy soils, which supply abundant moisture during rainy periods but which dry out almost completely in the absence of rain, favour the grassy component of savannas. Trees, on the other hand, require water in at least small amounts at all seasons even if they drop their leaves; deep soil layers supply that need. Trees in savannas are favoured by stony soils, which allow deep penetration by roots but which are less favourable to grasses. Nevertheless, especially toward the end of the dry season, many trees may lose their leaves to reduce transpirational loss of water, even though the leafless branches of some species carry open flowers. Soil, therefore, exerts some control over the nature of savanna vegetation, particularly in the drier parts of its distribution where sandy soils support grass-rich savanna with few trees and coarser, deeper soils support more tree-rich savanna with less grass.
