1. How does the HIV virus affect the immune system of humans. Be sure to talk about which cells it uses as a host and how using these cells destroys the immune system.
2. When does an HIV patient develop AIDS and what is the cause of death for most AIDS patients?
3. Is there a cure for AIDS and what affect do drug treatments have on HIV?
Answer:
Explanation:
1. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus and invades and takes over helper T Cells in the body's immune system. It invades the cell and uses reverse transcription to get the cell to replicate itself (the virus), a process which usually kills it. Helper T cells have the special job of stimulating B Cells to replicate into plasma cells and produce antibodies to fight pathogens. Since we are born with a set number of helper T Cells and they cannot replenish themselves, the number of T cells decreases over time with the HIV virus, thus inhibiting the body's immune response as none of the B Cells can be triggered to produce antibodies.
2. AIDS stands for Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome. An HIV patient is diagnosed with AIDS when they have less than 200 Helper T cells remaining in their body and is indicative of the almost total destruction of their immune system. Patients with AIDS can no longer fight off even simple diseases and will often succumb to them as a result. E.g. Tuberculosis, common cold etc.
3. There is currently no cure for AIDS however there are antiviral drugs which can slow down the decrease of T Cells in the body by inhibiting the virus. These are used to slow down the progression of HIV. Note: Antibiotics do not work on HIV as HIV is a virus and Antibiotics are only effective against bacteria.
